First Language Acquisition Process

Language acquisition or language acquisition is a process that takes place in the brain of a child when he got the first language or mother tongue. Language acquisition usually distinguished by learning the language. Related to language learning processes that occur at the time of a child to learn a second language when she earned her first language. Thus, language acquisition with respect to the first language, while learning a second language with regard to language (Chaer, 2003:167).During the first language acquisition, Chomsky said that there are two processes that occur when a child acquire first language. The process in question is the competence and performance process. These processes are two different processes. Competence is the mastery of grammar (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics) are not realized. Competency is carried by every child from birth. Although inborn, competence development requires that children have a performance in the language. Performance is the child's ability to use language to communicate. The performance consists of two processes, namely the process of understanding and the process of issuing sentences. The process of understanding involves the ability to observe or perceive sentences heard, while the publishing process involves the ability to generate their own sentences (Chaer 2003:167).

Furthermore, Chomsky also assume that language users understand the structure of language that makes him able to be creative sentences countless new and make him understand the sentences. Thus, competence is the intuitive knowledge that belongs to an individual regarding his mother tongue (native languange). Linguistic intuition is not simply exist, but are developed in line with the child's growth, while the performance is something that is produced by competence. It is questionable how the child's strategy in acquiring his first language and whether each child has the same strategy in acquiring his first language support? In this regard, Dardjowidjojo, (2005:243-244) states that in general, most experts now believes that children everywhere are obtained first language by using the same strategy. This similarity is not only based on human biology and neurology same, but also by the mentalistic view which states that the child has been provided with natural supplies at birth. In addition, there is also the concept of a universal language so that the children are mentally already know the natures are universal. Chomsky likens children as entities whose entire body has been installed and the power cables: where are squeezed, that will cause a particular light bulb lit. So, which language and what his form is determined by the surrounding input.
